Much of the industry eye rolls about solar announcements from the UK government (myself included) - however perhaps some change is in the air with two critical 'announcements' from the UK Government today - billed as 'Green day'.
The Government has revealed recently that it's focusing in on streamlining planning permission for solar and offshore wind - in order to "speed up the process and attract investment". No further information has been provided by many in the industry will welcome some focus on this part of development.
We can only hope that creating a faster and more certain process that the applications pipelines can progress faster. However, more concerning is the ability to achieve grid connections at this stage - even for the existing pipeline of applications or granted projects. It's most certainly one of the major, well-documented hurdles to deployment at scale. A disparity between planning and grid availability could grow substantially if applications streamline but infrastructure remains blocked.
In addition, the government in their 'Powering Up Britain' strategy announced the following: "We will establish a solar government/industry taskforce and we will publish a solar roadmap setting out a clear step by step deployment trajectory to achieve 70GW of solar by 2035." Not much to add at this stage, but we welcome focus on our industry at a strategic level.
